Black Sails is a period action adventure series set in the age of piracy, based around the independent free state that was created in New Provide Island (Bahamas) at the end of the 17th and beginning of the 18th centuries. In the series, factual events and real personages from the time are melded with fictional characters to tell the pre-story of Treasure Island. It was one of the first of the new genre of television series which brought a feature scale budget and high production values to the small screen.
We had a huge costume department to deal with the demands of such a fast paced action show. Virtually every costume worn by both actors and supporting artists had to be manufactured from scratch and aged in order to create the various different groups. From pirate gangs, island locals, british military and naval uniforms spanning a 20 year period, plus the various other localities visited during the season, including 1700 upper class London.
I researched costumes and society from all over the world for inspiration for the series and materials were sourced in the UK, Europe, Turkey and the Far East to create the look. Using a skilled team of leather and metal workers, we were able to create iconic garments and accessories which brought the characters of this time to life.
